A laptop also known as a notebook is a compute designed to be portable, features a screen which is hinged to a keyboard. It comes along with a battery as a portable power supply device and a touchpad working as the mouse for the input. Mini laptops which are also known as a netbook or subnotebook or ultraportable, take this ideas still further, creating a whole new popularity above the laptop computers, the smartphones and the personal digital assistants. The main characteristic of these netbooks are that they are small in size and are less heavy, which is similar to that of an average diary, and as well as less price than the general laptop. The prices of netbooks start at around 150 pounds, and it is a feasible solution during these difficult financial times.

Mini laptops though all the above advantages lack the capacity of their bigger counterparts. There is limited hard drive capacity and thus heavy programs cannot be handled by the netbooks there is no CD or DVD drive thus making it a factor o think about before buying. The main focus of the netbooks is on connectivity. Internet downloading is fast growing and catching up with netbooks so that the buying of the product is not a loss afterall.

New mini laptops are being expected to be sold around 5.2 million units when we are at the end of the year 2008, by 8 million during the time period of 2009 and it is expected that the figure will move to 50 million by the year 2012 - which would be a tenfold growth. The industry analysts suggest that only 10% market share of the laptops will be taken over by the netbooks but it is really a more serious issue than that. The figures may turn out to be more. However, while this economic downturn exists, people will look to a cheaper product and while mini laptops are available in the affordable range of 150-200 pounds; there surely is a larger market after all.

Coming to the point weather the PC's and standard laptops will fall in popularity, the answer will be that while mini laptops are capable to perform a number of tasks identical or may be similar to the standards of the larger computers, the limitation will be in respect to battery size, the speed of processing and the amount of storage space. These differences while existing between the laptop and the netbook is not pronounced enough to make the laptops obsolete. Furthermore, if one has to use a computer for a longer period of time, it would be better using a bigger display and a fast processor. Particularly the demanding processes such as the various games, bigger screens are a must.

Laptops, of different quality, are also available around 200-300 pounds leading to some industry experts to believe that consumers will focus on the functionality and not only price, size and the portability.

At the opposite side, cell phone manufacturers are entering the netbook market with products branded under the leading brands. The 3G service has been the latest introduction with these collaborations.

The difference between the laptops and the netbooks may seem vague, but there certainly is a space for both of them to independently function. Being lighter the netbooks certainly have an advantage in this respect.
